As soon as October hit, I pulled out all my fall goodies stored away for the past year. I was most excited to finally have my vanilla pumpkin candle burning every possible second. Besides the delicious combination of my two favorite things: vanilla and pumpkin, there are a lot of other joyous things to look forward to like the obvious fall celebration: Halloween. Halloween is an incredibly fun holiday for those who celebrate and dress up as anything you would like. While this is an exciting time for people to be creative and have fun with friends and family, this is also a wasteful and harmful holiday as fast fashion plays a key role in creating costumes.
About 7 million Halloween costumes are thrown out every year, this is equivalent to about 83 million plastic bottles. And about 80% of Halloween costumes are made of dangerous fabrics that decompose and damage our environment. As it may seem easy to hop on Amazon or your favorite fast fashion brand’s website, try something different this year and design a sustainable costume. Below are tips and tricks to reduce your carbon footprint for the upcoming spooky holiday.
Tip #1: Costume Swaps
Get the best of both worlds this Halloween and swap costumes with your bestie, you will save money and most importantly, the planet!
Tip #2: Reuse or Repurpose
Instead of purchasing a new costume, look in your closet and revisit what you have worn in previous years. You can also consider repurposing old clothing; you can get creative and transform everyday apparel into costumes.
Tip #3: Hop on Sustainable Platforms
There are countless users on platforms like Depop, Thrifted, Thredup and Poshmark trying to sell their Halloween costumes. You can easily find unique and affordable options.
Tip #4: Donate or Sell
If you have an old costume sitting around, consider trying to sell it to a thrift store or online. This extends the life cycle of the costume and ensures it does not end up in a landfill.
